ÉTYM. 1615; caryophyllate, XVIIe; lat. bot. caryophyllata, grec karuophullon. → Girofle.

1 Adj. Se dit de fleurs à cinq pétales à onglet allongé. || L'œillet est une fleur caryophyllée.
2 N. f. pl. (1898). || Caryophyllées (vx) ou caryophyllacées. Famille de plantes phanérogames angiospermes (Dicotylédones dialypétales), comprenant des arbustes et des herbes annuelles ou vivaces qui croissent surtout dans l'hémisphère boréal. || Les Caryophyllacées se divisent en deux groupes : 1) Alsinées (alsine, arenaria, bufonie, cherlérie, céraiste ou cerastium, eremogone, gouffeia, holostée, honckénéja, lepigonium, malaquie, moenquie, mouron, sabline, stellaire, spergulaire, spergule). 2) Silénées (agrostemma, caryophyllus ou eugenia ou giroflier, coronaria, cucubale, dianthus, gypsophile, lychnis, melandrium, nielle, œillet, saponaire, silène, tunique, vélézie). — Au sing. || Une caryophyllée, une caryophyllacée.
